Scripture Focus: Galatians 1:10 & John 21:21-22
“For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” — Galatians 1:10
A few weeks ago, I had the beautiful opportunity to attend a women’s conference. It was an incredible weekend, and it was so powerful to see God working through each and every woman there, including my mom. But if I’m being completely honest, somewhere in the back of my mind, a small inkling of fear crept in.
I looked at the gifts, the confidence, and the ways God was moving through the women around me, and I felt instantly unqualified. I found myself thinking, “My talents and abilities don’t measure up to what they are doing. How could God ever use me like that?”
Without even realizing it, I had walked straight into the trap of comparison.
The Sickness of Comparison
I recently heard a quote that completely sums up the danger of this mindset:
“Comparison either makes you feel inferior or superior. Neither honors God.”
Think about how true that is. At the end of the day, if we are comparing ourselves to anyone other than Jesus, our hearts and minds are simply not in the right place. If we look at others and feel better than them, we fall into pride. If we look at others and feel worse than them, we fall into insecurity and self-pity. Neither one of those spaces reflects the kingdom of God.
Our minds should be so completely focused on God and His unique purpose for our lives that we don’t have to chase after others or long for the lives they have. Our ultimate measuring stick for success should be Jesus, not the person sitting next to us in the church pew.
“What is That to Thee?”
The Bible shows us that even the disciples struggled with this. In John 21, right after Jesus tells Peter about the difficult path ahead of him, Peter looks over at the disciple John and asks, “Lord, and what shall this man do?”
Basically, Peter was saying, “What about him? Is his path going to look like mine?”
And Jesus gives a response that we all need to print out and stick on our mirrors:
“Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.” — John 21:22
Jesus didn’t give Peter a long explanation. He simply said: What is that to you? You, follow Me. Peter’s focus was on John and what he was doing when it should have been on Jesus and what he was calling him to do.
Guarding Your Own Lane
God is saying the exact same thing to us today. When we look at how He is using another woman and wonder why our gifts look different, He gently whispers: What is that to you? Keep your eyes on Me.
Your calling is not a competition. God didn’t create you to be a duplicate of someone else; He created you to be a vessel for His specific purpose. When we waste our time comparing our beginning to someone else’s middle, we take our eyes off the Master. As Galatians 1:10 reminds us, if our focus is on measuring up to people or seeking their approval, we switch from being servants of Christ to servants of comparison.
You don’t need their talents to fulfill your assignment. You just need your obedience and His grace.
🤍 Reflection & Prayer
Where have you been looking at someone else’s lane instead of focusing on the path right in front of you?
A Prayer for the Week:
Lord, forgive me for letting comparison steal my peace and my focus Thank You for creating me with a specific purpose and placing a unique calling on my life. I thank you that you created me uniquely and in your very image. Help me to take my eyes off the crowd and fix them entirely on You. Teach my heart to stop measuring success by what others are doing, and let Jesus be my ultimate focus. Amen.
