Trusting God’s Plan When You Can’t See The Whole Page

•

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” Martin Luther King Jr.

Let’s be honest: when it comes down to the word “faith,” your mind usually goes to one of two different thoughts: fear or security.

It all depends on exactly what we are putting our faith in. If we are choosing to trust in another human being, someone who can change just as quickly as the weather, then we may be in trouble. If we are trusting in ourselves, our own abilities, or our own provision, then at some point wether we want to admit it or not, we are going to let ourselves down.

But when we choose to trust in the Lord, the same God who created the world and meticulously planned out every detail of your life, then we can have true peace. We can have peace in knowing that He holds all things securely in His hands.

Lately, the Lord has been showing me that real, enduring faith, the kind of faith we need to get us through the hardest seasons, isn’t built by Him laying out the whole blueprint before us. It’s built over time, in the quiet, uncertain moments when we choose to trust Him without knowing the next step.

It would be so easy for us to trust God if He came and sat on the edge of our beds with a little notebook, detailing everything that is ever going to happen in our lives. I would be the first to say, “Absolutely, sign me up!” But truth be told, there is no real trust in that. When we truly trust someone, we will follow them even in the dark.

I’m also learning that faith doesn’t demand explanations from God; it rests in His character. That means as God’s children, we should strive to know Him and His character so deeply that we don’t feel the need to question His every move.

Think about it this way: when we see a reputable construction crew building a house, we don’t question where they are putting certain screws or how they are framing the roof. We don’t micromanage them because we know that it’s their job, and they have an excellent reputation. However, if someone were to hire a less reputable crew to build their home, there would probably be constant uncertainty and hesitation about everything they are doing.

Let’s wrap it up by remembering that God is a Good Father who loves His children deeply. He has proven this to us time and time again in His Word. As Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

He may not hand us that little notebook on the edge of our bed, but He has given us His Word, and His track record is perfect.

You don’t have to figure out your whole life’s story today. You just have to trust the Author with the exact page you are currently on.

What is something in life right now that you are having to actively choose to let go and trust God? Or maybe you have a testimony that you can share about a time where you’ve chosen to trust God. Let’s encourage each other in the comments below.
